In Kenya, the Jarretts minister as a family through World Medical Mission from their base at Tenwek Hospital in the Western Highlands area 3 hours west of Nairobi. They are generally in Kenya each year from January to July. Paul is in charge of the OBGYN service of this large referral hospital. Marty leads Bible studies for missionary wives and national house helpers as well as backyard Bible club for neighborhood Kenyan children. Rachel helps the missionary moms with their young children. When the other Jarrett girls and Alicia Bechtle are in Kenya, they lead music during worship services and assist in other ministries at the hospital as well as orphan ministry.

The family distributes Bibles to local churches and pastors and to people in the marketplaces. They give soccer balls to local schools and clubs in the name of Jesus with the assistance of local pastors.

The area of Godメs work that is drawing much of the Jarrett's attention at the present time is assistance to orphans. Working closely with the local Africa Gospel Church leadership, they distribute funds for high school education for local orphans and children of widows [more than 60 older children in 2005]; they also assist younger orphans with books, uniforms, and other supplies that allow them to continue attending school.

They have also assisted in the establishment of four local children's homes. These orphans who are the poorest of the poor have no resources on which to survive on their own; many are orphans as a result of the AIDS crisis. These homes are named Umoja [16 children], Kitoben Vision [34 children] Kenduiwa [17 children], and Bosto [over 40 children expected]. Castleview Baptist Church has been the chief sponsor for the Bosto Children's Home. Whereas the other homes have been functioning for 10 months to 2 years, Bosto is expected to open in the second half of 2005. In all of these homes, the children are shown and taught the love of Jesus. A Bible has been provided to each child. As well as love and spiritual encouragement, the children receive food, clothing, shelter, education, and medical assistance.

Our prayer is to teach the local churches that God has given them the responsibility to care for these children. This is a slow process that goes against cultural traditions of only taking care of those who are related to you, although that is a very large circle in itself.

The Jarretts also minister in Eastern Europe. Paul is a board member of Mission to Ukraine, an international humanitarian aid organization that is based in Indianapolis. He has made trips to Ukraine regularly for several years to participate in and oversee this multifaceted ministry. The ministries include crisis pregnancy assistance, medical and spiritual assistance to families who have children that are deaf or disabled in other ways, abstinence education in public schools, and evangelistic English lessons for local medical professionals as well as aid to local hospitals and orphanages. The ministry has teamed with several Indianapolis area churches to do summer camps for children in these targeted groups. There is a medical and rehabilitation center that provides direct care for many of the people in these target groups.

During their times at home, Paul has served as a substitute teacher in Zionsville's public schools and recently as a physician volunteer for Genessaret free medical clinics for the homeless and working poor in downtown Indianapolis. Paul and Marty both work continuously to encourage others who are considering medical and other mission work.

Prayer Needs:

  • Adjustments each year to the changes in ministry and family structure as family members pursue education or marry.
  • Safety during international travel and ministry in an increasingly hostile world.
  • Wisdom in managing personal finances and our residence during our long absences.
  • Continuing good health sufficient to keep up with this busy schedule.
  • To cultivate and maintain an attitude of total dependence on God for all needs.
